Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
