Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
