Our Premier Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Premier Position.

Initially, Lux could seem closer to a difficult academic examination rather than a new pop album by a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Broken into 4 different parts and performed in 13 tongues, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged album that delves into female mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, often through the lens of various women saints. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the work of other pop stars look rather small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to transcend dry academic posturing feels almost a miracle, with full credit going to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to alchemize the past and the present, the ambitions are far greater here, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. The element that really elevates this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, is a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit shines clearly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral surge crashes in with cartoonish force. The song immediately segues into the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic with this album lies in you rarely quite understand—nor wish to know—what it will go next."

Almost each track finishes at a completely different point than where it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of fame over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into electronic chaos. Another, a cut that recalls her earlier trap-infused style starts out moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

A key achievement on Lux involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little surprise that it has achieved her first release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies as it spirals upward. This trick is repeated by a different powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried gems that takes time to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet where the characters at it, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flit between discussions about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day musical from pop's truly restlessly creative visionary.
